Allium (Ornamental Onions)
Alliums are exceptional plants for supporting UK pollinators, particularly the common carder bee (Bombus pascuorum), early bumblebee (Bombus pratorum), and honeybees (Apis mellifera). Their spherical flower heads provide abundant nectar and pollen, attracting hoverflies like the marmalade fly (Episyrphus balteatus) and butterflies such as the small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae). The seed heads also offer winter food for goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) and other seed-eating birds. Ground beetles and spiders often shelter in their foliage, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem. For best results, plant Alliums in sunny, well-drained borders where pollinators can easily access them from late spring through summer.
