Sauromatum (Voodoo Lilies)

Sauromatum’s striking, foul-smelling inflorescence (May - June) specializes in attracting carrion flies (Calliphoridae) and fungus gnats (Mycetophilidae), which pollinate its lurid spathe. Though tropical, its drought-tolerant tubers thrive in sheltered UK gardens, where its brief but dramatic bloom creates a niche habitat for decomposer invertebrates. Plant in dappled shade with Arum (lords-and-ladies) to mimic natural woodland decay cycles. While the foliage is sparse, its large leaves later shelter ground beetles and spiders. A curiosity for exotic wildlife gardens, Sauromatum supports unconventional ecological interactions rarely seen in temperate climates.
