The Allium sphaerocephalon also known as the Drumsticks, is an elegant flower with tight bunches of maroon flowers forming an egg-shaped head. The Drumsticks are an autumn plant and as such do best when planted from September to December, the allium will then produce its unusual blooms in early summer from June to July. When fully grown the Drumsticks can reach a maximum height of 60cm.
The Allium sphaerocephalon does best when planted about 10cm deep in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny area of the garden. Taller alliums like this one can also benefit from shelter on one side to help prevent the tall flower spikes from being blown over.
