Dichelostemma (Wild Hyacinths)
Dichelostemma’s vibrant, clustered blooms (May – June) attract early-summer pollinators like the red-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius) and hoverflies (Syrphidae), drawn to their nectar-rich tubular flowers. Though native to North America, their drought-tolerant nature makes them valuable for UK rockeries or dry meadows, where they extend floral resources after spring bulbs fade. Their grassy foliage provides cover for ground beetles and spiders, while their corms are occasionally foraged by small mammals like wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus). Pair with UK-native Allium ursinum to create pollinator-friendly, low-water gardens with ecological depth.
