Leucojum (Snowflakes)

3 products

Leucojum’s nodding, bell-shaped flowers (February – April for L. vernum, April – May for L. aestivum) provide critical early-season nectar for bumblebee queens (Bombus terrestris) and honeybees (Apis mellifera), bridging the gap between winter and spring blooms. Their grassy foliage shelters overwintering invertebrates, while their damp meadow habitat supports ground beetles and spiders. Planted in drifts under deciduous trees or in wetland margins, they naturalise beautifully alongside native Caltha palustris (marsh marigold). Though less common than snowdrops, their extended flowering and tolerance for wet soils make them invaluable for sustaining pollinators in waterlogged or shady gardens.
