Galanthus (Snowdrops)
Galanthus’ delicate white blooms (January – March) are a lifeline for early-emerging queen bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) and honeybees (Apis mellifera), providing vital nectar when few other flowers exist. Their pollen is rich in protein, fueling pollinators awakening from hibernation. Ants disperse their seeds via lipid-rich elaiosomes, supporting soil ecosystems. Naturalised in woodlands or shaded gardens, snowdrops thrive alongside native Hellebores, creating winter pollinator corridors. Their ecological value makes them indispensable for sustaining biodiversity during the coldest months.
