The Allium nigrum also known as Black Garlic, Broad-leaved Leek or Broadleaf Garlic, is an exquisite allium with small complex leaves with a lilac hue. The Black Garlic is an autumn bulb so does best when planted late in the year from September to December. The allium will then produce stunning blooms in early Summer. Once fully grown the plant can reach an impressive 70cm.
The Allium nigrum does best when planted about 10cm deep in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny area of the garden. Taller alliums like this one can also benefit from shelter on one side to help prevent the tall flower spikes from being blown over.
