Drosera capensis (Cape Sundew)

Drosera capensis, commonly known as the Cape Sundew, is an evergreen carnivorous perennial admired for its delicate yet striking form. It produces rosettes of slender, spoon-shaped leaves that glisten with red or pink glandular hairs. Each hair secretes a sticky droplet that captures small insects, giving the leaves a dewy appearance under bright light. The foliage often takes on a reddish tint when exposed to strong light, adding visual warmth to the plant’s elegant shape. From spring through autumn, and occasionally into winter, tall stems rise from the centre, bearing clusters of soft pink flowers that open sequentially along the stem.

Growing Conditions

Drosera capensis thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers a consistently moist environment. It grows best in a mix of sphagnum moss and perlite or sand, ensuring good drainage while retaining moisture. Use only rainwater, distilled, or reverse-osmosis water, as minerals from tap water can harm the roots. The plant enjoys high humidity and moderate warmth, typically between eighteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. It adapts well to terrariums or bright windowsills where conditions remain damp but airy.

Care and Maintenance

This sundew requires minimal attention once settled. Keep the soil moist at all times by standing the pot in a shallow tray of water during the growing season. Avoid fertilisers, as the plant gains nutrients from captured insects. Remove dead leaves carefully to prevent mould. In cooler months, water less frequently but do not allow the compost to dry out completely. Regular exposure to natural light ensures healthy colour and strong growth.

Environmental Benefits

Drosera capensis provides natural pest control by trapping small insects and gnats. Its gleaming, dew-covered leaves add a touch of wonder to indoor collections, combining beauty with function in any plant display.
