Ficus pumila (Creeping Fig)
Ficus pumila, also called the Creeping Fig, is a versatile evergreen climber or trailer admired for its delicate foliage and vigorous habit. It produces slender, self-clinging stems that can reach up to 3 metres in length. The leaves are ovate, rich green, and vary in size depending on growth stage; small and rounded on climbing shoots, and longer on mature, non-climbing stems. Each leaf measures between 2 and 5 centimetres, forming a dense covering of glossy greenery. Mature plants may produce small purple fruits up to 5 centimetres long, adding subtle colour and texture. The fine foliage creates a soft, trailing or climbing display that complements terrariums, hanging baskets, or living walls.
Growing Conditions
Ficus pumila thrives in bright, indirect light but adapts well to partial shade. It prefers a free-draining, fertile compost kept evenly moist. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings to prevent over-saturation. This species grows happily in warm indoor temperatures between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. High humidity encourages lush foliage, so regular misting or placement near other plants helps maintain ideal conditions. Avoid exposure to cold draughts or sudden temperature changes, which can damage tender leaves. It may also grow outdoors in mild climates when provided with shelter.
Care and Maintenance
This species is easy to care for and responds well to trimming. Prune long stems to control growth and maintain shape. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Repot every two to three years using fresh compost to support healthy roots. If grown as a trailer, allow the stems to cascade freely from a container; when trained as a climber, provide a textured surface for attachment.
Environmental Benefits
Ficus pumila contributes to better indoor air quality and introduces natural greenery to vertical or compact spaces. Its dense foliage softens architectural lines and provides a calming, organic accent indoors.
