What Are Wireworms?
Wireworms are the destructive larvae of click beetles, commonly infesting crops like potatoes, carrots, corn, and peas. These yellowish-brown pests (1–4 cm long) live in the soil and can cause significant damage by feeding on roots, seedlings, and tubers.
Signs of Infestation
- Stunted plant growth and reduced yields
- Tunnels and scars in root vegetables (especially potatoes and carrots)
- Weak or dying plants due to root and stem damage
Lifecycle & Treatment Timing
Female click beetles lay eggs from late April to July, which hatch in about a month. For best results, apply nematodes from May onwards, ideally 5 days before planting susceptible crops. Since larvae can survive in soil for 3–5 years, repeat applications throughout summer to target newly hatched worms.
How to Identify Wireworms
- Long, slender, shiny yellow-brown bodies with dark heads
- Found in soil, feeding on roots and stems
Application Tips
- Water plants within 30 minutes of application to wash nematodes into the soil.
- Avoid extreme temperatures (freezing or excessive heat).
Storage Instructions
- Refrigerate upon arrival (keep below 5°C).
- Check the expiry date before use.
