MightyBug Natural Aphid Killer contains the natural predator the two-spotted ladybird (Adalia bipunctata) which targets, hunts and eats aphids.

Ladybirds are known as the gardener’s best friend, having a reputation for being the most familiar beneficial insect. They are easy to identify for their red bodies and black spots, being veracious hunters of aphids (greenfly and blackfly) and are used to control pest outbreaks.

Ladybirds eat a variety of aphid species, which may be useful if you have aphid problems on a number of different plants which may be different kinds of aphid, or simply do not know which species of aphid is causing the problem.

Adult ladybirds can fly, so adult ladybirds are best used to control pest insects in enclosed areas, such as greenhouses, homes or polytunnels.

Ladybird larvae come in containers and are provided with buckwheat, a carrier material used to keep the small ladybird larvae safe during transport, as well as giving them somewhere to hide. The young ladybirds will be small on arrival and may be difficult to find hidden in the buckwheat. Once released, they will feed and grow over approximately 4 weeks, developing their identifiable orange patches on their flanks. The ladybirds in the MightyBug – Ladybird larvae are easy to apply, either by pouring over the plant leaf surfaces or adding to a MightyBug Distribution Box and then left with no maintenance required.

MightyBug Ladybirds should be applied at the following rates;

  • 25 adults treat 2.5m sqm
  • 100 adults treat 10m sqm
  • 100 larvae treat 10m sqm
  • 250 larvae treat 25m sqm

Mightybug Ladybirds require temperatures of 12-13°C to thrive. For plants grown outdoors, as well as in unheated greenhouses, usage between April and October is recommended.

Naturally in the UK, adult ladybirds will be dormant and hide throughout the shorter and colder daylight hours of the winter. (October to March.) Due to this natural behaviour, even indoor use during this period may result in lower levels of activity, especially if no artificial light is used.
