Scadoxus (Blood Lilies)
Scadoxus’ bold, spherical blooms (June - August) provide nectar for hummingbird hawkmoths (Macroglossum stellatarum) and bumblebees (Bombus terrestris), drawn to their vivid red flowers in sheltered UK gardens. Their broad, tropical leaves create damp microhabitats for ground beetles and spiders, while their fleshy roots thrive in moist, shaded spots. Plant alongside late-summer bloomers like Salvia to extend pollinator value. Though frost-sensitive, potted Scadoxus adds exotic flair to urban balconies, offering architectural interest while supporting adaptable pollinators when few other dramatic flowers remain.
