Agapanthus (African Lilies)
Agapanthus provides valuable support for several UK pollinator species, particularly buff-tailed and white-tailed bumblebees (Bombus terrestris/lucorum), honeybees (Apis mellifera), and Red Admiral butterflies (Vanessa atalanta). Its summer nectar flow helps sustain these insects during seasonal gaps in native flowering. The plant's sturdy stems also attract stem-nesting solitary bees like the hairy-footed flower bee (Anthophora plumipes). While less favoured by birds, the dense clumps may shelter ground beetles and spiders that support garden ecosystems. For maximum wildlife benefit, plant in sunny, sheltered spots where pollinators can easily access the blooms from July to September.
