Vitis vinifera 'Chasselas Rosé'

Vitis vinifera ‘Chasselas Rosé’ is a productive grape vine with soft pink fruit and a reliable growing habit. It suits UK gardens where you want something useful as well as good-looking. The grapes ripen from pale rose to deeper pink in warm summers. You can eat them fresh or use them for small-scale wine-making at home. The vine also gives strong leafy growth, which works well for screening or shade through summer.

You may also see it sold as Rosé Chasselas, Pink Chasselas, or simply Chasselas Rosé.

Why you will like it in your garden

  • Attractive fruit colour that stands out against green leaves.
  • Sweet, juicy grapes that suit fresh eating.
  • Strong climber for walls, pergolas, arches, and greenhouses.
  • Seasonal change, fresh green leaves in spring, then yellow tones in autumn.

Benefits for UK wildlife

This vine adds useful structure to your garden, which supports wildlife in practical ways. Thick summer growth offers shelter for small birds during hot or wet weather. Training it along fences or trellis creates cover where birds and insects can move with less exposure. As leaves fall in autumn, they help protect the soil surface. This supports worms and other soil life, which in turn feeds birds and improves soil health for nearby plants.

Height and spread

With the right support, this vine can reach around 8 to 12 metres in height. Spread is usually between 3 and 6 metres. Regular pruning keeps it within bounds and improves fruit quality.

Best growing conditions

  • Light, full sun is important for good fruit colour and sweetness.
  • Position: choose a warm, sheltered spot. South or south-west facing walls work well.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential. Neutral to alkaline soil suits it best.
  • Water, water young plants well in their first year. Water established vines during long dry spells.
  • Airflow, avoid cramped planting. Good air movement reduces disease risk.

Pruning and care tips

Pruning keeps the vine healthy and helps it crop well. It also improves light levels around the fruit.

  • Winter, cut back to a clear framework and remove weak shoots.
  • In summer, thin excess growth so sun reaches the grapes.
  • Tying in, secure new growth regularly to prevent wind damage.
  • Feeding, apply garden compost or well-rotted manure in spring as a mulch.
