The RHS Snuffles Hedgehog Box includes a protective tunnel, waterproof roof, and raised feet to deter predators and keep hedgehogs safe and dry. It is best to place the box in a sheltered, tranquil location, away from wind and rain, and ideally surrounded by ample undergrowth. A corner of the garden would be an ideal spot.
Provide a source of dry leaves or straw near the entrance for hedgehogs to use as bedding. Spring and early autumn are ideal times to clean the Hedgehog box, being mindful of the hedgehogs' hibernation and breeding cycles. Avoid cleaning the box during hoglet season, which typically occurs from May to early September.
To properly clean the Snuffles Small Hedgehog Box, use hot soapy water and ensure that the box is completely dried and well-ventilated. When providing food, place it at a distance of at least a couple of meters, as hedgehogs typically do not eat and sleep in the same area. Hedgehogs have a preference for specialized hedgehog food, tinned meaty dog or cat food, and crushed cat or dog biscuits.
Avoid giving hedgehogs bread, milk, or mealworms as they can be harmful. To prevent disease, regularly clean the feeding station and remove any leftover food. Use hot soapy water and rinse well, preferably outside. The tunnel should be securely fastened before use using the provided screws.
