Tillandsia cyanea (Pink Quill Bromeliad)

Tillandsia cyanea, widely known as the Pink Quill Bromeliad, is an elegant epiphytic perennial prized for its bright, sculptural display and compact size. It forms neat rosettes of narrow, arching, dark green leaves reaching up to 35 centimetres in length. The leaf bases are tinged with red, adding a subtle contrast beneath the foliage. From the centre of the rosette emerges a flattened, paddle-shaped bract of vivid pink, resembling a feather or quill. Between the layers of the bract appear delicate violet flowers that open successively, providing weeks of colour. The combination of pink and purple tones gives the plant a refined, tropical look that enlivens both homes and offices.

Growing Conditions

Tillandsia cyanea thrives in bright, filtered light and warm, humid conditions. It prefers temperatures between eighteen and twenty-six degrees Celsius and should be kept away from direct sunlight, which can bleach the bracts or scorch the leaves. Although naturally epiphytic, it adapts well to containers filled with a free-draining orchid or bromeliad compost. Keep the central cup, or “tank,” lightly filled with fresh, non-chlorinated water and change it weekly. The compost should remain slightly moist but never soggy. Gentle airflow supports healthy growth and prevents stagnation. Regular misting helps sustain humidity and keeps the leaves fresh.

Care and Maintenance

This species is simple to maintain and long-lasting when cared for properly. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted bromeliad fertiliser applied to the leaves or rosette. After flowering, the main rosette will slowly decline while producing offsets, or pups, around its base. These can be removed and replanted once they reach about one-third of the parent’s size.

Environmental Benefits

Tillandsia cyanea enhances indoor air quality and brings tropical vibrancy to interior plant displays. Its striking pink bracts and violet blooms introduce colour, texture, and elegance to any setting.
