Festuca glauca (Blue Dwarf Grass)
Festuca glauca, known as blue dwarf grass or blue fescue, is a compact evergreen perennial forming neat cushions of fine, needle-like leaves. Each tuft reaches about 25 centimetres in height and spreads slightly wider, creating tidy domes of colour. The leaves, slender and inrolled, display a striking ice-blue hue through spring and summer, shifting to softer green tones in the colder months. From late spring into summer, the grass produces narrow, upright flower plumes of blue-green that fade gradually to warm golden-brown, offering gentle contrast to the cooler foliage tones.
Growing Conditions
Festuca glauca thrives in well-drained soil and bright sunlight. It prefers poor to moderately fertile ground, where excessive richness can soften its distinctive colour. The plant tolerates drought once established and performs best in open borders, gravel gardens, or containers. Good air circulation and a sunny position preserve the clarity of its blue leaves. When grown in pots, choose free-draining compost mixed with grit to avoid root saturation.
Care and Maintenance
This grass requires minimal attention. Remove faded flower heads and older outer foliage each spring to renew its rounded shape. Division every few years prevents congestion and refreshes growth. It remains evergreen, yet a light trim after winter tidies any discoloured leaves. Water sparingly, as excessive moisture weakens the plant. It fits both contemporary and natural garden schemes, serving effectively as edging, ground cover, or accent among stones and paving.
Environmental Benefits
Festuca glauca contributes structure and texture year-round while supporting insects that seek shelter among its dense tufts. Its seed heads attract small birds later in the season. Hardy, drought-tolerant, and resilient, this ornamental grass provides lasting visual interest with little effort.
