Epipremnum aureum (Devil's Ivy)
Epipremnum aureum, commonly called Devil’s Ivy or Golden Pothos, is a vigorous evergreen climber admired for its glossy, variegated foliage and trailing growth habit. It produces long, slender stems that can reach 4 metres or more when unpruned, making it ideal for hanging baskets or climbing supports. Young plants display heart-shaped, bright green leaves patterned with streaks and spots of yellow or cream. As the plant matures, the leaves can become larger and deeply lobed, sometimes reaching up to 90 centimetres in length under optimal conditions. Though flowering is rare in cultivation, mature specimens may occasionally produce green spathes similar in form to those of other aroids. The combination of rich colour, lush form, and adaptability makes Devil’s Ivy a favourite among indoor gardeners.
Growing Conditions
Epipremnum aureum thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates partial shade, making it suitable for a wide range of indoor settings. Excessive sunlight can fade the variegation, while too little light may reduce growth and leaf colour. It prefers a free-draining, peat-free compost that retains some moisture. Water when the upper layer of soil feels dry, allowing excess to drain fully. Ideal temperatures range between sixteen and twenty-eight degrees Celsius. Moderate humidity helps maintain leaf gloss and colour intensity, though the plant adapts well to normal household air conditions. It can be grown as a climbing plant on a moss pole or allowed to trail freely from elevated containers.
Care and Maintenance
This species is very low-maintenance and ideal for beginners. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser. Trim stems regularly to control length and encourage bushier growth. Repot every two years to refresh the compost and support continued vigour.
Environmental Benefits
Epipremnum aureum improves indoor air quality by filtering airborne toxins. Its cascading foliage and enduring colour provide freshness and texture to both modern and traditional interiors.
