Nephrolepis exaltata (Boston Fern)

Nephrolepis exaltata, widely known as the Boston Fern, is a classic evergreen houseplant admired for its soft, cascading foliage and elegant shape. It forms a broad clump of finely divided, ladder-like fronds that arch gracefully from a central crown. Each frond can reach up to 2 metres in length, lined with narrow, oblong pinnae in light green tones. The plant’s lush texture gives it a timeless, tropical appeal, ideal for adding freshness and softness to interior spaces. Mature specimens may also produce slender runners bearing young plantlets, which can be rooted easily to create new ferns. The dense growth creates a full, feathery display that looks striking in hanging baskets or large pots.

Growing Conditions

Nephrolepis exaltata thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity. It prefers cool to moderate temperatures, ideally between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. The compost should be rich, moisture-retentive, and free-draining. Keep the soil evenly damp but avoid letting it become waterlogged. This fern enjoys regular misting, particularly during dry weather or when placed near heating. It performs best away from strong draughts and direct sunlight, both of which can scorch the fronds. Bathrooms, kitchens, and shaded conservatories offer excellent growing environments.

Care and Maintenance

This species is relatively low-maintenance when kept moist and humid. Remove any browned or ageing fronds to maintain a clean appearance. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertiliser. Repot every two to three years in fresh compost to support continued growth. The plant responds well to regular trimming, which encourages denser foliage. Offsets produced on runners can be separated and replanted to expand your collection.

Environmental Benefits

Nephrolepis exaltata is renowned for its air-purifying qualities, helping to remove toxins and improve indoor air freshness. Its arching fronds add natural movement and a sense of calm to interior environments.
