Narcissus 'Fortune' Bulbs

Narcissus 'Fortune' is a bold, large-cupped daffodil producing bright yellow flowers with a striking deep reddish-orange centre.

Flowering in March and reaching around 40–45cm tall, this colourful variety brings strong contrast to early spring borders, containers and mixed bulb displays.

  • Height: 40–45cm
  • Spread: 10–15cm
  • Flower colour: yellow with a deep reddish-orange cup
  • Flowering time: March
  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil

About Narcissus 'Fortune'

Narcissus 'Fortune' produces one substantial flower on each upright stem, held above narrow, strap-shaped green foliage.

The broad perianth segments are a clear, cheerful yellow and surround a long cup-shaped corona in a contrasting deep reddish orange.

The corona is gently flared towards its edge, creating an attractive trumpet-like appearance while allowing the rich orange colouring to stand out against the surrounding yellow petals.

'Fortune' belongs to the Large-Cupped group of daffodils. Varieties within this group produce one flower per stem, with a corona measuring more than one-third of the length of the perianth segments but no longer than the petals themselves.

Its March flowering period makes 'Fortune' a useful choice for bringing strong colour to the garden early in the spring season.

Benefits for UK Wildlife

Early spring-flowering Narcissus can contribute to a varied wildlife-friendly planting scheme.

  • Flowers may be visited by early bees and other pollinating insects
  • Adds floral diversity during the early spring months
  • Combines well with other early flowering bulbs

Plant alongside crocuses, muscari and other spring bulbs to create a longer succession of flowers.

Where to Grow Narcissus 'Fortune'

  • Spring garden borders
  • Patio pots and containers
  • Cottage gardens
  • Mixed bulb displays
  • Naturalised planting

The strong contrast between the yellow petals and reddish-orange cup makes 'Fortune' particularly effective when planted in groups or generous drifts.

Planting Tips

  • Plant bulbs in autumn.
  • Choose a sunny or partially shaded position.
  • Plant approximately 10–15cm deep.
  • Space bulbs around 10cm apart.
  • Water after planting if conditions are particularly dry.

Once flowering has finished, remove faded blooms but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This allows the bulbs to store energy for the following year's flowers.

Why Grow Narcissus 'Fortune'

  • Bold yellow and reddish-orange flowers
  • Distinctive long, large cup
  • Early March flowering
  • Excellent for borders and containers
