Dodecatheon meadia (Shooting Star) Rhizomes

Dodecatheon meadia, commonly called Shooting Star, is a graceful woodland perennial grown for its distinctive nodding flowers and neat rosettes of foliage.

In spring, slender upright stems rise above the leaves carrying clusters of rosy-lilac flowers that resemble falling shooting stars.

  • Height: 30–45cm
  • Spread: 30–40cm
  • Flower colour: rosy-lilac
  • Flowering time: spring to early summer
  • Position: partial shade or light shade
  • Soil: moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil

About Dodecatheon meadia

Dodecatheon meadia forms low rosettes of lance-shaped green leaves close to the ground.

From the centre of the rosette, upright stems develop carrying loose umbels of nodding flowers around 2cm long.

The petals sweep backwards while the prominent stamens project forward, giving the flowers their characteristic shooting-star appearance.

This plant is closely related to primroses and is sometimes classified within the genus Primula.
