With a robust and hearty growth pattern, Clematis viticella 'Kermesina' blooms in the late summer and is adorned with a multitude of bright red flowers from July through September. Its namesake comes from the kermes insect, which provides the red dye cochineal, and the stunning scarlet blooms are a beautiful addition to any garden as they climb through trees, shrubs, and climbing roses. This type is also highly resistant to clematis wilt and is able to withstand moderate winds.
Clematis plants can be either deciduous or evergreen shrubs, herbaceous perennials, or climbers that use twining leaf stalks. Many varieties also produce striking flowers, while some feature fluffy seedheads in autumn.
To ensure the happiness of this plant, it is best to plant it in a location where its roots will remain cool and moist, ideally with some shade provided by lower-growing species. This plant prefers full sun and a well-drained soil.
