The Cardiocrinum giganteum also aptly known as the Giant Himalayan Lily is one of the most impressive plants available. These giants can reach a staggering 350cm (nearly 11.5ft) tall when fully grown from a seed. It produces equally gigantic heart-shaped leaves that reach up to 45cm (18 inches) and stunning trumpet-shaped cream flowers with stunning red throats that can reach 20cm (8 inches) when fully grown.
The Cardiocrinum giganteum bulblets need to be planted between September and November to provide them with plenty of time to establish themselves before the frosts. The giant lily then takes 3 to 4 years to grow where it will flower once and then proceed to die of, leaving behind a number of bulblets that can then be grown on for more flowers in the following years.
The Giant Himalayan Lily is a forest plant and such prefers dappled shade out of the way of direct sunlight. The lily should also be planted in deep fertile soil such as humus with plenty of leafmould or compost to help growth.
This beautiful giant will bloom (when mature) through the summer months, once the flowers have died back it will produce attractive seed pods. Propagating these seeds is essential for getting the plants to their maximum potential height of 3.5m as the plants propagated from the bulblets stay much smaller, reaching around 1.5m at max height. The trade-off for this impressive growth is a much longer growth time, typically taking up to 7 years to flower.
Planting Time: September - November
Flowering Time: June - August (once mature)
Max Height: 1m-1.5m from bulblet, 3m-3.5m from seed
