Canna (Canna Lilies)
Canna lilies can attract the elusive hummingbird hawkmoths (Macroglossum stellatarum) with their tubular, nectar-rich flowers, offering a vital energy source for these migratory insects in late summer. Their broad leaves provide shelter for ground-dwelling invertebrates like spiders and beetles, which in turn support insectivorous birds such as wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes). While not a primary pollinator plant, their prolonged blooming (July – October) helps sustain late-foraging bees when other flowers fade. For best ecological impact, plant in sunny, sheltered spots near ponds or in exotic borders paired with salvias to create a hummingbird hawkmoth hotspot.
