Alocasia (Elephant Ears)
While not native to the UK, Alocasia’s large, architectural leaves provide unique shelter for invertebrates like woodlice, ground beetles, and spiders, which in turn attract insectivorous birds such as robins and wrens. The plant’s water-filled leaf axils may occasionally serve as mini-habitats for tiny aquatic organisms. However, Alocasia offers little nectar or pollen for pollinators. To maximise wildlife value, pair it with moisture-loving UK-native plants in shaded, damp areas, creating a layered habitat. Its tropical foliage adds exotic interest while supporting small-scale biodiversity in sheltered urban gardens.
