About Tulipa 'Blushing Lady'

Tulipa 'Blushing Lady' is a striking late-flowering variety, combining impressive height with an unusual mixture of warm colours.

The flowers open with yellow tones through the petals, overlaid with broad areas of rose-pink. Rather than having sharply defined stripes or edges, the colours blend into one another, creating a softer, almost hand-painted appearance.

The rose colouring is particularly strong towards the lower and central areas of the petals, while the upper edges retain more of their warm yellow tones. The precise balance of colour can change as the flowers mature, adding extra interest throughout their display.

The blooms have an elegant, elongated shape and are carried high above the foliage on strong stems. At approximately 70cm tall, 'Blushing Lady' is one of the taller tulips and provides useful vertical interest amongst shorter spring bulbs and perennials.

Flowering in May, it also helps extend the tulip display towards the end of spring.

Benefits for UK Wildlife

The single flowers of Tulipa 'Blushing Lady' are more accessible to visiting insects than densely double-flowered tulips.

  • Flowers may be visited by spring pollinating insects
  • Adds floral diversity to late-spring planting
  • Combines well with other pollinator-friendly spring bulbs and perennials

For a more wildlife-friendly display, combine tulips with alliums, muscari and other open flowers that provide additional sources of pollen and nectar.

Where to Grow Tulipa 'Blushing Lady'

  • Garden beds and borders
  • Large spring bedding displays
  • Cottage gardens
  • Mixed tulip planting
  • Large patio containers
  • Cut flower gardens

Its blend of yellow and rose-pink works particularly well with softer pink, apricot and cream flowers. For a bolder contrast, combine it with deep purple or burgundy tulips.

Planting Tips

  • Plant bulbs in autumn, ideally during October and November.
  • Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil.
  • Plant approximately 10–15cm deep.
  • Space bulbs around 10cm apart.
  • Plant in groups for the strongest visual impact.
  • Choose a reasonably sheltered position to protect the tall stems from strong winds.

Like most tulips, 'Blushing Lady' dislikes prolonged waterlogging, particularly while the bulbs are dormant. Good drainage is therefore especially important.

After flowering, remove faded blooms but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it.

Excellent for Cut Flowers

The long stems of 'Blushing Lady' make this variety particularly good for cutting. Its combination of rose-pink and yellow provides plenty of colour in spring bouquets, while the tall stems work well in larger arrangements.

Cut the flowers once the buds are well coloured but before they have fully opened. They will continue opening once placed in water.
