Haworthia fasciata (Zebra Plant)

Haworthia fasciata, commonly known as the Zebra Plant, is a compact, rosette-forming succulent admired for its bold markings and symmetrical structure. It grows up to 12 centimetres tall, forming tight clusters of stiff, fleshy, triangular leaves that radiate neatly from the centre. The leaves are deep green and decorated with striking horizontal bands of white, warty tubercles on the outer surfaces, giving a zebra-like pattern and textured finish. This combination of shape and contrast creates a sculptural appearance ideal for minimalist interiors or small decorative arrangements. In summer, slender flower stalks rise to about 40 centimetres, bearing delicate, tubular white blooms that complement the foliage without distracting from it.

Growing Conditions

Haworthia fasciata thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates lower light levels, making it a versatile indoor plant. It prefers a well-draining, gritty compost suitable for succulents and cacti. Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. During winter, reduce watering further to prevent root rot. Ideal temperatures range from sixteen to twenty-six degrees Celsius. This plant appreciates moderate airflow and normal household humidity, requiring no misting. Its compact habit makes it perfect for windowsills, desks, or grouped displays with other small succulents.

Care and Maintenance

This species is low-maintenance and long-lived with simple care. Feed lightly in spring and summer using a diluted cactus fertiliser to support slow, steady growth. Remove faded flower stalks after blooming. Repot every two to three years into fresh compost, ensuring good drainage. Propagate by separating offsets that form around the base once they develop small roots. With minimal attention, it retains its tidy form and bright pattern year-round.

Environmental Benefits

Haworthia fasciata contributes structure, colour, and air-purifying qualities to compact living spaces. Its durability and rhythmic leaf patterns add calm and visual order to modern interiors.
