Ficus benjamina 'Variegated'

Ficus benjamina ‘Variegated’, often called the Weeping Fig, is an elegant evergreen tree that brings graceful movement and refined colour to interior spaces. When cultivated indoors, it can grow up to 3 metres tall, forming slender, arching branches covered with glossy, pointed leaves. Each leaf displays a soft green centre edged with irregular creamy-white margins, creating a subtle marbled effect. The foliage catches light beautifully, giving the plant a bright and airy quality. As it matures, the branches form a cascading canopy, lending a natural, tree-like presence to rooms and conservatories.

Growing Conditions

Ficus benjamina ‘Variegated’ thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates partial shade. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the variegated leaves. A warm environment between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius suits it best. It prefers free-draining, loamy compost kept lightly moist—allowing the top layer to dry slightly before watering again helps maintain balance. Humidity supports healthy growth, so regular misting or placement near other plants is beneficial. Avoid cold draughts or sudden temperature changes, which may cause leaf drop. With the right conditions, it grows steadily and remains lush throughout the year.

Care and Maintenance

This plant is easy to maintain with consistent care. Feed every four to six weeks in spring and summer using a balanced, diluted fertiliser. Prune lightly to shape the canopy and remove any discoloured or damaged leaves. Repot every two to three years in fresh compost to encourage strong root development. Regular cleaning of the leaves with a damp cloth keeps them glossy and dust-free.

Environmental Benefits

Ficus benjamina ‘Variegated’ improves indoor air quality and brings a tranquil, natural presence to living spaces. Its gently arching form and soft variegation complement both modern and traditional décor styles.
