Stapelia leendertziae (Black Bell)
Stapelia leendertziae, commonly known as the Black Bell, is a striking succulent houseplant admired for its sculptural form and unusual flowers. It grows up to 30 centimetres tall and forms compact clumps of upright to slightly curving, four-angled stems. The stems are thick, green to grey-green, and softly ridged, giving a geometric appearance typical of the Stapelia genus. In late summer, large, inflated buds appear near the stem bases. These open into remarkable bell-shaped flowers, about 8 centimetres across, coloured deep maroon to almost black. The velvety petals and unique shape resemble dark leather bells, making this species particularly distinctive. The blooms release a strong odour to attract pollinating flies, a natural trait of carrion flowers.
Growing Conditions
Stapelia leendertziae thrives in bright, indirect light and warm, dry conditions. A sunny windowsill or bright conservatory suits it well. It prefers a coarse, free-draining cactus compost to prevent moisture build-up around the roots. Water sparingly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter when the plant rests. Ideal temperatures range from eighteen to twenty-six degrees Celsius. Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues. It can be moved outdoors in summer if protected from rain and cool night temperatures.
Care and Maintenance
This species is low-maintenance and rewarding for collectors of unusual succulents. Feed lightly in spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Remove spent flowers to keep the clump tidy. Repot every few years in fresh compost to encourage healthy new stems. Avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can cause stem rot.
Environmental Benefits
Stapelia leendertziae adds sculptural form and rare colour to indoor displays. Its fascinating flowers attract curiosity while contributing to the biodiversity of indoor pollinators when grown near open windows.
