Tradescantia zebrina - Purple
Tradescantia zebrina, often called the Wandering Jew or Inch Plant, is a trailing evergreen perennial admired for its vibrant foliage and easy-growing nature. It forms cascading stems that reach up to 15 centimetres in height and spread widely when given space to trail. Each lance-shaped leaf displays deep bronze-green tones accented by two striking, silvery bands running lengthwise across the upper surface, while the underside glows with a rich purple hue. Small rosy-purple flowers may appear at the tips of the stems throughout the year, adding subtle colour to the glossy leaves. The plant’s shimmering stripes and fluid growth habit make it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, and terrariums.
Growing Conditions
Tradescantia zebrina thrives in bright, indirect light, which enhances the vivid contrast of its leaves. It tolerates moderate shade but produces richer colour under stronger light. The plant prefers warm, humid conditions and well-drained compost kept evenly moist. Allow the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Ideal temperatures range between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. It adapts easily to most indoor spaces and grows quickly in the right environment, providing lush coverage within months.
Care and Maintenance
This species is undemanding and well suited to beginners. Pinch back longer stems to promote bushier growth and maintain shape. Water regularly during the growing season and reduce slightly in winter. Feed every few weeks with a diluted, balanced fertiliser to sustain vibrant colour. Replace older stems periodically with fresh cuttings to renew growth and ensure a dense, trailing display.
Environmental Benefits
Tradescantia zebrina adds texture and natural colour to interiors while contributing to improved air quality. Its trailing habit softens hard lines and creates flowing movement in indoor arrangements.
