Ficus elastica (Rubber Fig)

Ficus elastica, commonly known as the Rubber Fig or Rubber Plant, is a striking evergreen species valued for its bold foliage and strong architectural form. In its natural habitat, it grows into a large tropical tree, though indoors it remains a manageable, elegant houseplant. The broad, oval-shaped leaves are glossy and deep green, often flushed with red when young and turning darker as they mature. Their undersides display warm bronze tones that add richness and depth to the plant’s appearance. Each leaf can reach between 30 and 45 centimetres in length, creating a lush canopy that reflects light and adds texture to interior spaces. In warm outdoor conditions, mature specimens may produce small yellow figs, though this is rare indoors.

Growing Conditions

Ficus elastica thrives in bright, indirect light but also tolerates partial shade. It prefers warm indoor temperatures between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius and moderate humidity. A free-draining, loamy compost suits it best, keeping the soil lightly moist while allowing excess water to escape. Overwatering can harm the roots, so water only when the surface of the compost begins to dry. Occasional misting helps preserve leaf gloss and prevent dust build-up. Avoid cold draughts or sudden temperature changes, which may cause leaf drop.

Care and Maintenance

This species is straightforward to care for and well suited to beginners. Feed every four to six weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted fertiliser. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to maintain their shine. Repot every two years in fresh compost to refresh nutrients and encourage healthy root growth. Prune lightly to shape the canopy and control height.

Environmental Benefits

Ficus elastica is recognised for improving indoor air quality by filtering pollutants and releasing oxygen. Its large, glossy leaves and upright growth bring structure, calm, and tropical character to interior spaces.
