Gynura aurantiaca (Purple Velvet Plant)

Gynura aurantiaca, commonly known as the Purple Velvet Plant, is a striking evergreen perennial cultivated for its vivid colouring and unusual texture. It forms upright or semi-trailing stems clothed in soft, dark green leaves covered with fine purple hairs. This velvety coating gives the plant an iridescent sheen that glows in natural or artificial light. The undersides of the leaves are rich violet, deepening the contrast between light and shadow. Mature plants may produce clusters of yellow, orange, or red disc-shaped flowers, typically during winter. Although the blooms have a strong scent, they provide a bright accent against the purple foliage.

Growing Conditions

Gynura aurantiaca thrives in bright, indirect light, which enhances the intensity of its purple colouring. It prefers a warm, humid environment and a free-draining compost rich in organic matter. Ideal temperatures range from eighteen to twenty-four degrees Celsius. Keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can damage roots. The plant performs well in hanging containers, on shelves, or supported against structures where its trailing stems can recline naturally. It tolerates moderate shade but produces its best colour in brighter settings.

Care and Maintenance

This species requires modest care. Pinch back growing tips regularly to maintain compactness and encourage branching. Remove faded flowers to reduce odour and keep the plant neat. Feed every four weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertiliser. Repot every two years to renew compost and refresh root space. If stems become leggy, take cuttings to propagate new plants easily.

Environmental Benefits

Gynura aurantiaca adds dramatic colour and tactile interest to interior spaces. Its soft, reflective foliage contributes to visual warmth and complements both modern and vintage décor schemes.
