Orbea variegata (Star Flower)

Orbea variegata, known as the Star Flower, is a distinctive, succulent perennial admired for its striking form and patterned blooms. It produces erect, angular stems that resemble small cactus arms, reaching around 10 centimetres in height. The stems are soft green with toothed ridges and a slightly mottled surface. From late summer to autumn, each plant bears several five-pointed flowers measuring 5 to 8 centimetres across. The petals display a cream or pale yellow base heavily spotted with deep reddish-purple markings, creating the star-like pattern that gives the plant its name. The flower’s unusual texture and bold colouration make it a captivating feature in any indoor display.

Growing Conditions

Orbea variegata thrives in bright, indirect light with occasional direct sunlight. It prefers warm conditions and well-drained, gritty compost similar to that used for cacti and succulents. Allow the soil to dry between waterings, as the plant stores moisture within its fleshy stems. Overwatering should be avoided to prevent rot. During winter, reduce watering and keep the plant in a cool, dry spot with plenty of light. It flourishes in rooms with good air circulation and performs well on sunny windowsills.

Care and Maintenance

This species is undemanding and well suited to beginner growers. Water sparingly from spring to early autumn, ensuring complete drainage after each watering. Feed once a month during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Remove any faded flowers to maintain neatness and discourage fungal growth. Repot every few years using fresh, gritty compost to sustain vigour and healthy root development.

Environmental Benefits

Orbea variegata adds sculptural interest to indoor plant collections, enhancing air freshness and visual diversity. Its striking star-shaped flowers draw admiration and provide a focal point within succulent arrangements or windowsill displays.
