Fittonia albivenis (Nerve Plant)

Fittonia albivenis, often known as the Nerve Plant, is a compact evergreen perennial admired for its vibrant leaf patterns and lush ground-covering habit. It forms a dense mat of low, creeping stems that root as they spread. The broad, elliptic leaves display a deep green background highlighted by intricate networks of silvery-white veins, creating a striking contrast. Each leaf has a slightly glossy surface that reflects light beautifully, giving the plant a fresh and lively look. Small, pale white flowers may appear occasionally, though the foliage remains the main attraction, bringing vivid detail to terrariums, shelves, and tabletops.

Growing Conditions

Fittonia albivenis thrives in bright, indirect light and warm, humid environments. It grows well in terrariums, shallow dishes, or as underplanting for taller houseplants. Avoid strong sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, and maintain steady moisture levels. The compost should remain evenly damp but not waterlogged. A mixture rich in organic matter, such as peat-free houseplant compost blended with perlite, works best for drainage and aeration. Ideal temperatures range between eighteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius, with good humidity to prevent leaf curling or browning edges.

Care and Maintenance

This species is easy to care for when kept consistently moist and humid. Mist regularly or place the pot on a pebble tray to sustain humidity. Feed lightly every month during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Pinch back longer stems to promote bushy growth and maintain a compact shape. Remove any faded leaves to keep the plant looking fresh. Repot annually to renew compost and support healthy root development.

Environmental Benefits

Fittonia albivenis enhances indoor air quality while adding texture and colour to small spaces. Its intricate foliage pattern brings calm and vibrancy to terrariums and interior plant displays.
