Hemionitus arifolia (Heart Fern)

Hemionitus arifolia, commonly known as the Heart Fern, is a delicate and elegant evergreen species admired for its glossy, heart-shaped fronds. This small, tender fern forms compact clumps with tufted growth, reaching around 15 centimetres in height. Each frond features a smooth, mid-green blade shaped like a heart or narrow spear, supported by slender, shiny black stalks that create a striking contrast against the foliage. The leaves are leathery and slightly wavy, maintaining their rich colour throughout the year. Its sculptural form and fine texture make it particularly appealing as a feature plant in terrariums, shaded shelves, or small indoor displays.

Growing Conditions

Hemionitus arifolia thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity, replicating the sheltered, tropical habitats it originates from. It prefers a moist but well-draining compost composed of fine bark, peat-free fibre, or sphagnum moss. Keep the soil consistently damp without allowing it to become waterlogged. Ideal temperatures range between eighteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. Position away from direct sunlight, which may scorch the glossy fronds, and protect from draughts or cold air. Regular misting or placement in a terrarium helps preserve humidity, preventing the leaf edges from drying out. Its small stature and rich colour make it suitable for both minimalist and botanical-style interiors.

Care and Maintenance

This fern is straightforward to care for when kept in stable conditions. Water with soft or filtered water to prevent mineral build-up on the leaves. Feed sparingly in spring and summer with a half-strength liquid fertiliser. Remove older fronds as they fade to maintain compact growth. Repot every two years in fresh, moisture-retentive compost. It rarely suffers from pests when humidity remains high.

Environmental Benefits

Hemionitus arifolia enhances indoor air quality and brings calm, organic beauty to shaded environments. Its heart-shaped foliage and elegant form create a natural sense of serenity in enclosed spaces.
