Clematis 'Kiri Te Kanawa'

Grow Clematis 'Kiri Te Kanawa' for rich colour and double flowers. This deciduous climber produces large, layered blooms in deep purple tones early in the season.

Later flowers are paler, giving a natural shift in colour. It flowers in late spring to early summer on older stems, then again in early autumn on new growth.

  • Height: Up to 2.5m
  • Spread: 1–1.5m
  • Position: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Moist but well-drained soil
  • Flowering period: Late spring to early summer, and early autumn

Key Features

  • Double flowers 10–15cm across
  • Deep purple early blooms, softer tones later
  • Cream stamens add contrast
  • Repeat flowering across the season

Wildlife Benefits

  • Open centres allow access for pollinators
  • Supports insects across multiple flowering periods
  • Climbing habit provides light shelter for insects

Plant it with other climbers to extend flowering times. Do you have plants that bloom in both spring and autumn?

Planting Tips

  • Plant with roots shaded and top growth in sun or light shade
  • Provide support such as a trellis or obelisk
  • Water regularly while establishing
  • Prune lightly after the first flush to encourage repeat flowering
  • Mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool

Place it where the double flowers can be seen up close. The layered petals are best appreciated at short range.
