Clematis 'Gillian Blades'

Choose Clematis 'Gillian Blades' for clean, bright flowers and a manageable size. This compact, deciduous climber produces large single blooms with pure white sepals and golden stamens.

Early flowers can show a light blue tint, adding subtle variation. It flowers in late spring and again in late autumn, giving you colour at two key points in the season.

  • Height: 2.5–3m
  • Spread: 1–1.5m
  • Position: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Moist but well-drained soil
  • Flowering period: Late spring and late autumn

Key Features

  • Large white flowers 15–20cm across
  • Crimped petal margins add texture
  • Golden stamens create strong contrast
  • Compact climber suited to smaller spaces

Wildlife Benefits

  • Open flowers allow access for bees and pollinators
  • Supports insects during key flowering periods
  • Climbing habit provides light shelter for wildlife

Plant it with other climbers to extend flowering times. Do you have enough plants blooming in both spring and autumn?

Planting Tips

  • Plant with roots shaded and growth in sun or light shade
  • Provide support such as a trellis or obelisk
  • Water regularly while establishing
  • Mulch to keep roots cool and moist
  • Prune lightly after the first flowering to encourage a second flush

Place it where the white flowers stand out against darker backgrounds. This helps the blooms remain visible even at a distance.
