Clematis 'Burma Star'

Grow Clematis 'Burma Star' if you want rich colour without a large climber. This compact, deciduous variety produces deep purple flowers with a velvety finish and subtle red tones through the centre.

Each flower reaches up to 12.5cm across, with gently wavy margins and dark red anthers. It flowers in late spring and again in late summer, giving you two periods of interest.

  • Height: Up to 2.4m
  • Spread: 1–1.5m
  • Position: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Moist but well-drained soil
  • Flowering period: Late spring and late summer

Key Features

  • Velvety deep purple flowers with red central flush
  • Large blooms up to 12.5cm across
  • Compact growth ideal for smaller spaces
  • Repeat flowering across the season

Wildlife Benefits

  • Open flowers provide access for bees and pollinators
  • Adds to seasonal nectar sources in the garden
  • Climbing habit creates light shelter for insects

Train it near seating areas to watch pollinators up close. Do you have climbers that flower more than once in a season?

Planting Tips

  • Plant with roots in shade and growth in sun
  • Provide support such as a trellis or obelisk
  • Water regularly during dry periods
  • Prune lightly after the first flush to encourage repeat flowering
  • Mulch around the base to keep roots cool

Place it where the flower colour contrasts with lighter backgrounds. This helps the deep tones stand out more clearly.
