Leatherjackets are the root-feeding larvae of crane flies (often known as daddy long legs) and can cause serious damage to lawns. Feeding below the surface from autumn through to the following summer, they weaken grass by destroying the root system, leading to yellowing patches and poor growth. Lawns affected by leatherjackets can often be lifted easily, and further damage is common as birds and wildlife dig into the turf to feed on the larvae.

How to Control Leatherjackets

Agralan Leatherjacket Nematodes provide an effective, natural solution to control these damaging lawn pests. These beneficial nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) actively seek out leatherjacket larvae in the soil, entering their bodies and releasing bacteria that stop them from feeding and cause death. The nematodes then multiply within the larvae, helping to spread control throughout the lawn. This biological treatment targets the pest without harming pets, wildlife or beneficial organisms.

How to Use Nematodes

Mix the nematodes with water and apply evenly to moist soil using a watering can or nematode applicator such as an Aquanemix. For best results, ensure soil temperatures are above 12°C and keep the lawn well-watered before and after application. The main treatment period is between September and October when young larvae are most vulnerable. A follow-up treatment can be applied in spring (mid-April to mid-May) at double strength if required. Regular monitoring will help maintain a healthy, damage-free lawn.
