Phalaris (Canary Grasses)
Phalaris, commonly known as canary grass, offers several benefits to UK wildlife. These perennial grasses provide shelter for small mammals and ground-nesting birds. Their dense growth creates safe habitats, while their seeds serve as a food source for finches and other seed-eating birds.
The tall, fibrous stems of Phalaris support insects, including beetles and spiders, which in turn attract insectivorous birds. Some species, like Phalaris arundinacea (reed canary grass), thrive in wetland areas, helping stabilise soil and prevent erosion. Their adaptability makes them useful in both wild and cultivated landscapes.
