Myosotis (Forget-me-nots)
The Myosotis genus, commonly known as forget-me-nots, includes the water forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides), a particularly beneficial species for UK wildlife. This variety thrives in damp soils and shallow water, making it ideal for pond edges or bog gardens. Its nectar-rich blooms attract bees and hoverflies, while its dense foliage provides shelter for aquatic insects.
Forget-me-nots self-seed readily, creating natural ground cover that supports small wildlife. Birds often forage for their seeds. Both water forget-me-nots and their woodland cousins (Myosotis sylvatica) offer early spring nectar when few other flowers are in bloom. These hardy plants need minimal care once established.
