Iris (Pond Irises)
Irises are great for healthy pond ecosystems, offering both structure and sustenance for wildlife. Their tall, strappy leaves provide perches for dragonflies and damselflies, while the rhizomes create underwater shelter for tadpoles and aquatic insects. In early summer, their striking flowers attract bumblebees and hoverflies, with native species (like Iris pseudacorus) supporting specialised pollinators. The dense clumps help stabilise pond edges, preventing erosion while offering cover for frogs and newts. Whether planted in shallow margins or bog gardens, irises combine ornamental appeal with ecological value, turning any pond into a thriving habitat.
