About Tulipa 'Canadian Liberator'

Tulipa 'Canadian Liberator' is a classic choice for gardeners who want a strong splash of red in the middle of the tulip season.

The flowers are a vivid, clear red, with broad petals forming substantial, beautifully shaped blooms. Their intense colouring stands out particularly well against the fresh green foliage and makes an immediate impact when the bulbs are planted in groups.

'Canadian Liberator' belongs to the mid-season group of tulips, flowering between the earlier varieties and those that bloom towards the end of spring. Its April to May flowering period makes it particularly useful when planning a succession of tulips for several weeks of continuous colour.

The flowers are carried on sturdy stems that cope well with typical spring weather. Growing to around 45cm tall, the plants are large enough to make an impact without becoming excessively tall or difficult to position within a mixed border.

Benefits for UK Wildlife

The single flowers of Tulipa 'Canadian Liberator' are more accessible to visiting insects than densely double-flowered tulips.

  • Flowers may be visited by spring pollinating insects
  • Provides flowers during April and May
  • Combines well with other pollinator-friendly spring bulbs

For a more wildlife-friendly spring display, plant tulips amongst alliums, muscari and other open flowers that provide accessible sources of pollen and nectar.

  • Spring garden borders
  • Formal bedding displays
  • Cottage gardens
  • Patio pots and containers
  • Mixed tulip displays

The bright red flowers are particularly effective planted in bold groups. Pair them with white or cream tulips for a crisp contrast, or combine them with orange, yellow and deep burgundy varieties for a warmer and more dramatic spring display.

Planting Tips

  • Choose a position in full sun with good drainage.
  • Plant approximately 10–15cm deep.
  • Space bulbs around 10cm apart.
  • Plant in generous groups for the strongest display.
  • Avoid soil that remains waterlogged during winter.

'Canadian Liberator' is a sturdy variety and its strong stems help the flowers cope with less favourable spring weather. It is nevertheless best grown in a reasonably open, sunny position where the stems can develop strongly.

After flowering, remove the spent flower heads but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it.

Excellent for Cut Flowers
