Red Barn Metal Seed Guardian
These squirrel-proof (and large bird-proof) bird feeders work by the holes in the surrounding protective cage only being large enough to let in the smaller species of garden bird. Squirrels and larger birds cannot fit through the cage mesh and soon lose interest in the bird feeder. The bird feeder inside is the same quality bird feeder you can buy individually. The bird feeder is mounted on the metal seed catcher tray, which forms the base of the guardian cage. If you want any spilled food to be deflected onto the floor so that the excluded animals can still feed, then the catcher tray can be turned upside down to the desired position (either the seed deflector or the catcher).
The guardians are simple to refill and assemble. The cage simply lifts off when removed from its hanging position for access to the bird feeder. There are no clips or fastenings. It just slots back together. All parts are interchangeable, so you can attach a seed feeder one week or a peanut feeder on another occasion, for example. The product includes the bird feeder of your choice.
Available in Seed, Peanut, and Fat Ball versions.
Red Barn is a family-run business with nearly 30 years in the trade, using their knowledge to bring you high-quality bird feeders that is designed to attract more birds to your garden than ever before.
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of bird feeders are there, and which should I choose?
From tube and hopper feeders to suet log feeders and nectar feeders, each suits different birds and food types. Choose based on the species you’d like to attract, your garden setup, and how often you want to refill.
What types of seeds attract the most birds to my garden?
Black oil sunflower, nyjer, safflower, peanuts, and suet each appeal to different species. Mixing seed types in separate feeders invites a wider variety of garden birds while keeping waste to a minimum.
How often should I clean my bird feeders, and why does it matter?
Clean your feeders, especially metal bird feeders, every two weeks, or weekly in damp weather. Regular cleaning prevents mold, bacteria, and keeps your garden birds healthy and returning.
What’s the most economical approach to bird feeding?
Buy seed in bulk, use affordable mixes, and make homemade suet. Durable feeders and DIY options from household items are popular options for cutting costs while still attracting a variety of birds.
