Tillandsia caput-medusae (Medusa's Head Air Plant)
Tillandsia caput-medusae, known as Medusa’s head air plant, is an evergreen, epiphytic perennial admired for its sculptural form and silvery sheen. It grows to around 15 centimetres tall, forming a swollen, bulb-like base from which slender, twisted leaves extend. Each leaf reaches about 25 centimetres in length, with a soft coating of fine hairs that give a grey-green tone and a slight shimmer in sunlight. The leaves curve and intertwine, creating a distinctive shape reminiscent of the serpentine hair of mythic Medusa. From spring through summer, upright flower spikes appear, displaying vivid red bracts and delicate violet-mauve tubular blossoms.
Growing Conditions
This air plant thrives without soil, absorbing moisture and nutrients through its leaves. It attaches easily to bark, driftwood, or decorative stone using natural fibres or soft wire. Bright, filtered light suits it best; too much shade dulls its silver colour. Indoors, position it near a window with good airflow. Outdoors, it enjoys warm, sheltered spots protected from frost. To keep it healthy, mist regularly with rainwater or soft water, allowing the plant to dry completely between sprays.
Care and Maintenance
Tillandsia caput-medusae requires gentle attention. Submerge it in water for half an hour once each week during warm weather, then drain thoroughly. Reduce watering in cooler months. Avoid standing water around the base, as this may cause rot. Remove any spent flower spikes once they fade to encourage fresh offsets, known as pups, which can later be separated and grown individually.
Environmental Benefits
As an epiphyte, this air plant supports a balanced environment by filtering airborne particles and moisture. It serves as a conversation piece in indoor displays and brings sculptural texture to terrariums and living art arrangements, adding natural elegance with minimal effort.
