Monstera delicoisa (Swiss Cheese Plant)
Monstera deliciosa, commonly called the Swiss Cheese Plant, is a bold and sculptural evergreen climber admired for its large, glossy foliage and distinctive natural perforations. In ideal indoor conditions, it can reach up to 5 metres in height, supported by strong aerial roots that cling to nearby surfaces. The broad, heart-shaped leaves are deep green and develop dramatic splits and holes as they mature, reaching up to 90 centimetres in length. These iconic leaves create a tropical canopy effect that enhances the look of modern and traditional interiors alike. Mature plants may also produce white, boat-shaped flower spathes and cream-coloured, cone-like fruits under the right conditions.
Growing Conditions
Monstera deliciosa thrives in bright, indirect light and warm indoor temperatures between eighteen and twenty-eight degrees Celsius. It prefers a rich, well-draining compost that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again. Higher humidity supports leaf gloss and helps prevent brown edges. The plant benefits from a moss pole or sturdy support, which encourages vertical growth and helps aerial roots anchor securely. Avoid strong sunlight, which can cause leaf scorching.
Care and Maintenance
This species is easy to maintain and highly resilient. Feed every month during spring and summer using a balanced, diluted fertiliser. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and reveal their natural sheen. Prune long stems as needed to control height and shape. Repot every two years in fresh compost to refresh nutrients and support vigorous root development.
Environmental Benefits
Monstera deliciosa improves indoor air quality while creating a lush, tropical atmosphere. Its large, sculptural leaves and graceful growth pattern add texture, depth, and calm to interior spaces.
