Ceropegia woodii (String of Hearts)
Ceropegia woodii, commonly called the String of Hearts, is a delicate evergreen perennial admired for its elegant, trailing form and patterned foliage. It produces long, slender stems that can reach more than 1 metre in length, adorned with pairs of small, heart-shaped leaves. Each leaf displays a soft grey-green pattern with silvery marbling on top and a gentle purple hue beneath. The foliage appears in an alternating chain, giving the plant its name. In warm conditions, it also bears lantern-shaped flowers in shades of pink and purple, about 2 centimetres long, which add further charm to its cascading stems. Its fine, flowing habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or trailing from tall planters.
Growing Conditions
Ceropegia woodii thrives in bright, indirect light and warm indoor temperatures. It tolerates some direct morning or late afternoon sun, which enhances leaf colour and growth. The plant prefers free-draining compost, such as a cactus or succulent mix, and benefits from a container with good drainage. Allow the soil to dry between waterings to prevent tuber rot. Ideal temperatures range from sixteen to twenty-four degrees Celsius. During winter, water sparingly and ensure adequate airflow around the stems to maintain health. The plant’s trailing growth habit makes it well suited for hanging displays or elevated pots.
Care and Maintenance
This species is undemanding and well suited to busy plant owners. Feed every four to six weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertiliser. Trim long vines to encourage branching and fuller growth. Propagate easily from stem cuttings placed in water or moist compost, or by separating small tubers formed along the stems.
Environmental Benefits
Ceropegia woodii enhances interior spaces with lightness and movement. Its cascading hearts bring natural rhythm, texture, and a sense of tranquillity to home décor.
