Tillandsia usneoides, commonly known as Spanish Moss, is a distinctive evergreen epiphyte admired for its soft, cascading form and silvery texture. It produces fine, branching, wiry stems that can extend several metres in length, draped with slender, cylindrical leaves covered in tiny silver-grey scales. The plant lacks roots and absorbs moisture and nutrients directly through its foliage. When seen in gentle motion, its trailing strands create a graceful, curtain-like effect. In late spring or autumn, it produces small, tubular flowers in shades of yellow-green or pale blue, each carrying a light, pleasant scent that adds delicate charm to its ethereal appearance.

Growing Conditions

Tillandsia usneoides thrives in bright, filtered light with good air circulation. It prefers warm temperatures between eighteen and twenty-six degrees Celsius and benefits from regular misting to maintain humidity. As a rootless epiphyte, it should be hung freely or draped over wood, wire, or other supports. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, which can dry the leaves excessively. Use rainwater or filtered water when misting, as minerals from tap water may damage the delicate foliage. Allow the plant to dry completely after watering to prevent rot, particularly in cooler weather.

Care and Maintenance

This species requires very little care once settled. Mist several times per week in warm conditions and less often during cooler months. A light feeding with diluted bromeliad fertiliser every few weeks during summer encourages healthy growth. If strands become too long or tangled, trim them carefully with clean scissors. The plant can be divided easily by gently separating sections and re-hanging them.
