Combine a planted floor with raised botanical features in the ProRep Flatpack Terrarium 60x45x60cm. This glass enclosure balances a broad front with enough height to separate lower foliage from small plants on suitable mounts. It offers an appealing format for growers who want a layered display rather than a flat carpet of leaves or a narrowly vertical arrangement.
Arrange the garden on more than one level
Consider a branching feature positioned towards the rear, with its outline visible above a lower collection of plants. The 60cm width lets you spread the upper planting sideways instead of stacking it directly over the same patch of soil. This can leave a useful opening through which to view the back of the enclosure.
Use the depth to create separate foreground and background areas, but resist filling the entire base. Access to roots, mounts and equipment becomes more important as the display matures. A design with visible gaps is often easier to maintain and gives each specimen room to develop its characteristic shape.
Match plants across the different levels
A compact fern, small Fittonia albivenis or manageable Pilea involucrata could contribute to the lower layer. Above them, selected miniature epiphytic orchids or small epiphytic bromeliads can be grown on suitable supports. These suggestions require individual checks for mature size and compatible growing conditions.
Plants on mounts should be treated as a separate root environment from those in substrate. Many epiphytes need airy conditions around the roots, not a coating of permanently wet soil. Keep the collection selective, and avoid assuming that every plant sold for a tropical terrarium needs the same watering schedule.
Access and ventilation for a planted collection
The ProRep terrarium is supplied flatpacked for assembly. Hinged front access gives you a practical route to plants at different heights. Mesh ventilation allows air exchange, the included terrarium lock secures the opening and the waterproof base assists with cleaning and maintenance.
The ventilated construction means humidity is influenced by the surrounding room as well as the planting. It is not an automatically regulated greenhouse. Monitor the actual growing areas, keep ventilation clear and avoid placing dense decorative backgrounds over openings that are needed for airflow.
Make room for long-term maintenance
Follow the supplied assembly instructions and place the enclosure on a firm, level support. Position decorative materials so that their weight does not stress the glass, and use removable mounts where practical. A specimen that can be lifted out is much easier to inspect or replace than one buried behind a permanent structure.
Plan lighting around the completed arrangement. Lower plants can be shaded by overhead foliage, while upper leaves need appropriate clearance from the fitting. Keep the terrarium away from strong direct sunshine, and use a separately selected plant light when suitable daylight is insufficient.
Water according to each root zone and provide a way to remove surplus water from the base. Choose the plants, substrate, supports and equipment separately. The enclosure can host a plant-only project; any proposed reptile, amphibian or invertebrate use requires a separate species-specific assessment.
