Create a tall botanical display without increasing the floor space beyond a 45cm square with the ProRep Flatpack Terrarium 45x45x90cm. Its upright proportions invite a different approach to terrarium planting: think of a section of a tree trunk, with small plants arranged at several heights and a quieter layer of foliage below.
A vertical feature for a compact footprint
The 90cm height makes this a candidate for an orchidarium-style project or a collection of miniature epiphytic plants. Instead of packing the base with larger houseplants, use the height to separate individual specimens. Gaps between mounts help reveal the shapes of their leaves and give you space to observe roots and new shoots.
A slender cork feature or branching arrangement could provide the visual structure. Position it so that it remains accessible through the front, and leave open areas rather than building a solid wall of planting. The aim is a display that still looks balanced when plants grow beyond their original mounting points.
Choose plants for the conditions you can provide
Miniature epiphytic orchids and compact bromeliads are possible choices, but their requirements vary considerably. Select specimens that share an appropriate temperature range and compatible light and humidity needs. A plant described as miniature may still produce long flower stems or spreading roots, so include those in your space planning.
For the lower level, consider a small tropical fern or a restrained patch of suitable terrarium moss. Avoid using vigorous groundcover simply to fill empty space. Keeping the base relatively open can make watering, cleaning and inspection easier, especially in a tall display with several independently maintained mounts.
Front access and a ventilated design
The glass enclosure comes in flatpack form for assembly. Hinged front access allows work on the planting from the side rather than solely from above, while mesh ventilation provides air exchange. It is supplied with a terrarium lock, and the waterproof base helps with cleaning and routine upkeep.
This is not a sealed growing cabinet with automatic climate control. High humidity is not guaranteed by the height or glass construction. Check conditions at more than one level, and choose any additional equipment around the needs of the collection. Ventilation should remain clear of leaves and background materials.
Design around light, watering and reach
Lighting deserves particular attention in a 90cm-tall enclosure. Upper leaves can shade the base, and a light suitable for the top may not adequately illuminate lower plants. Plan plant positions and suitable lighting together, follow the fitting instructions and avoid direct sunshine that could overheat the display.
Use secure, removable mounts where practical so that individual plants can be watered or inspected without dismantling the arrangement. Mounted roots and planted substrate may need different watering routines. Provide a means of removing surplus water rather than allowing it to accumulate unnoticed beneath the display.
Assemble on a stable support with room to open the doors fully. Choose plants, décor and equipment separately. This can remain a plant-only collection; keeping animals requires an independent assessment of their adult size and care requirements.
